Day 119...Preparations of an altar of stones,,,171 verses of law reminders...Lost Sheep"
Israel prepares entering in the land of "milk and honey" and uncut stones are to be used for reminders of the law and an altar. There is also a liturgy that warns those who transgress. Israel was very intentional in reminders of the law...tradition, teachings, stones, and liturgy.
Likewise...the 119th Psalm has 171 passages reminding to keep the law. Some of the tips are...First, memorizing scripture..."I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." Second, a growing heart... "run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!" Third...a most familiar inspiration about meditating on God's Word..."Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Fourth...obedience to God's Word brings life..."Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live." As if 170 passages about the importance of keeping the law is not enough...the closing word fears forgetting the law... "I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant, for I do not forget your commandments." Speaking of lost sheep! Luke speaks of being lost from God in the famous fifteenth chapter. A lost sheep illustrates God seeks 100 percent! A lost coin illustrates a diligent search for the lost.

In today's readings, the law was written on stones. Under the new covenant in Jesus, the law is written on our hearts (Heb. 8) in fulfillment of God promise made in the old testament. Praise God, I know I could not keep the law.
